Aikido at New Haven Aikikai

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art that is practiced worldwide by people of all ages. Its roots are in Japanese jujitsu, kendo and sword arts, with influence from Zen. The "do" in its name means Aikido is a martial path, practiced with a goal of self-transformation.

New Haven Aikikai - Fire Horse Dojo is a welcoming and energetic Aikido dojo. Our lineage is in the Aikikai style although we welcome Aikidoka of all backgrounds. We also offer classes in Aikido, Aikido weapons and Iaido, the art of drawing and cutting with the Japanese sword.

New Haven Aikikai Chief Instructor Liese Klein holds a 5th degree black belt in Aikido, a rank awarded by Kazuo Chiba Shihan. She has opted out of further promotions as a founder of the Forever Fifth movement, aimed at shifting resources away from the “Aikido ranking rat race” and toward growing the art and broadening its appeal to younger generations. There is no testing or meaningful skill assessment after the rank of 4th degree black belt in most lineages of Aikikai Aikido.

Please email via the contact form for more information and welcome to the dojo!
